The Railway Relay: Running for a Cause
The Railway Relay is a unique annual running event that brings communities together while raising funds for local charities. First launched in 2015, the event follows the route of the old railway line between Peterhead and Ellon in Aberdeenshire, offering runners a chance to enjoy both camaraderie and countryside.
About the Event
The relay covers a distance of around 26–27 miles (approximately marathon length) along the Formartine and Buchan Way. Teams of three to five runners take on the challenge, splitting the course into stages of roughly 2–4 miles each. This format makes the race accessible to a wide range of abilities, whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking to take part for fun and charity.
The course is mostly off-road, taking participants through quiet trails and scenic countryside with gentle gradients, long steady climbs, and some road crossings. It’s a great opportunity for runners to experience a historic route in a friendly and supportive setting.
